While in Vancouver this past year, I was coaching a competitive swim team, I had to sub for an instructor one day. They had a younger group of kids, among which was this one fantastic little boy who would express his feelings toward every instruction I'd give. He was so enthusiastic, and purely spread his unadulterated glee to all the other kids in the class.
I would say, backstroke drills now guys, and the others would start to have this "merde" look on their faces, but he'd immediately say, "OH MY GOD backstroke?! I LOVE BACKSTROKE!" and you could see the shift in the kids who are now thinking "hmmm well if HE gets so excited, maybe backstroke actually rocks?!"
I relayed this story to my family this past week, and it's been a running theme in our lives about everything. Man, in truth, we don't need to love everything, that's not the whole point of life and learning and growth, but honestly the immediate comedic (if nothing else) relief after saying "Omg I LOVE ______!" is just great. After my bike rides and runs I like to turn the shower on max cold for at least a minute and let the water go on my legs for recovery purposes, and....well, it's COLD. Yesterday, after priming the shower, I said out loud, "OMG cold?! I LOVE cold!" and laughed out loud- it loosened my whole spirit up and was such a relief! I'm saying this "I LOVE _______!" mantra lots, and man I hope I meet that kid someday when he grows up, he's truly inspired my life and that of my family, and I hope he inspires you too!
